After the dissolution of the Soviet Union Turkmenistan gained independence. It was an opportunity for the president, S. Niyazov, to display his megalomania. Ashgabat, the capital with modern architecture, was almost entirely dedicated to him. But this city does not reflect all the country. The Karakum Desert ("Black Sands") covers more than half of the territory. The rich caravans were going along the Silk Road long time ago. They halted in Merv, an oasis for all travelers lost in the vast arid area. The remains of this city are an evidence of a thousand-year civilization. The history of Turkmenistan is also revealed by Nisa, first capital of the Parthians. Turkmenistan also has mountains and the eastern shores of the Caspian Sea. Do not forget the Turkmens who, like many people of this region, have hospitable souls. Come through the doors of Turkmenistan and meet those people.
