Baikal Water
The Baikal water. This word-combination has already become a global brand, standard of purity and quality of potable water. The water of Lake Baikal has almost a constant temperature, +4°C, and warms up to 22°-24°C only in bays in July – August. However in winter the temperature doesn’t rise above +0,2°C under the ice.
Chemically the water is almost distilled. It contains only 120 mg of minerals per litre, that’s why local residents never have scale in their kettles and washing machines. The water is extremely transparent: it is possible to see a white disk at a depth of 40 metres.
In general the lake’s water level goes down gradually and has already reached its mark before the construction of the hydropower station. Throughout the water area the level varies up to 1metre. This variety is usually caused by the wind driving the water mass. There are no ebbs and flows in Lake Baikal like in other inland reservoirs. Also there are hardly any currents, they can be observed only along the shore; however their force is slight.
