Selenga Delta
The unique natural formation comprises an area of 1,120 km². Every year the Selenga brings to the Baikal about 3 million tons of solids that contributes a lot to its accumulation in form of bottom sediments. The delta stretches out from the basin of the Bolshoy Sukhoy river to the basin of the Boyarsky river (including), getting deeper to the Morskoy and Khamar-Daban Ranges. The significant part of the delta is swamped a lot and possesses a great number of tiny lakes. Besides, the lowland along the dales and interfluves of the Istok, the Bolshaya Rechka, the Abramikha, the Kultushny and other rivers is swamped as well. The delta comprises over 30 big and small channels. The river-bed is intensively washed out.
Islands, peninsulas, channels, lakelets and tiny bays form a very complicated labyrinth where it is really difficult to orient yourself.
There is a big number of birds within the area around the delta. In autumn, during a migration period, about 5-7 million of species pass by there. Among them swan, goose, heron and some other are met. Sometimes there can be observed black storks along with white cranes. The delta with its joining shallow water of the Selenga is considered to be the richest fishing and hunting area of the Baikal. There is allowed seasonal hunting and fishing on that territory.
The delta of the Selenga represents a perspective touristic zone on the territory of the Kabansky region.
