Shumak SpringsThe wild Shumak springs represent a unique nature phenomenon. Peculiar thermal springs are pouring out at the foot of the mountains at 1500m above sea level in the valley of the Shumak river, within the Tunkinsky barrens (the Eastern Sayans). A number of the underground water exits surpass 70 ones. The biggest springs possess the highest mineralization, their temperature varies between +17˚C and +39˚C, and they are used for taking bath. The central spring, at which a swimming pool-bath has been constructed, possesses elevated radiation, on account of that it is better to control strictly a bath-taking time. Before, an uneasy path across the Shumak pass represented a natural barrier against the mass invasion of tourists. However, after the touristic camp foundation as well as the carrying on of the constant helicopter flights, the number of people visiting the springs severely increased. These changes negatively influenced on the environment. Except a well-equipped touristic camp, there is presented a huge amount of diverse constructions of different types, such as dug outs and winter huts with heating stoves. Many small bridges, cross-walks, flood-gates along with miniature water mills have been built under the springs there. The surrounding glades are replete with sculptures made of wood, weathercocks hung on the high poles and air crafts samples. Unfortunately, a major part of these works has lost irrevocably after the heavy flood in 2002. It is possible to reach the Shumak springs on foot or by horse ride across the Shumak pass. Such a one-way passage takes 2 or 3 days. If there is no desire to go on foot, it is possible to travel by helicopter as well. © Text by BaikalNature. All rights reserved.
