    Excursion to Okhotsk
The first inhabitants were the Russian Cossacks in 1647, forming one of the earliest cities in Far Eastern Russia - Okhotsk. After the famous explorer Vitus Bering visited this city on the way to Kamchatka, during his first expedition in this part of the world, he proposed to build a nautical school for young sailors. Since, Okhotsk has been an important port on the Far Eastern coast, where a large number of expeditions were started. Now it is not such a big city, it is only a shadow of what it was before. However, Okhotsk is still a natural place that Russia can confidently be proud of.

The tiny island in the north of the Sea of Okhotsk, really beautiful place with birds, and very interesting for lovers of wild life. More than 140 species of birds can be found on the island, most of them migratory. However, 21 species of birds constantly live there, so the small island is one of the largest colonies of seabirds. Over 1.8 million birds enliven these rocks and obscure the sky when they fly high above the sea. Gulls, moevki, thick-billed murre, tuffed puffin, crested and small konyugs, ancient murrelet and many other species from paradise for birdwatchers. The island is also inhabited by foxes, and not as fearful as in other places, and this provides an excellent opportunity for photography.

This is a mountainous region to the south-east from the town of Magadan, partly belonging to the Magadanskiy Zapovednik. Among different animals this reserve protects Brown Bear and Snow Sheep. Though we have landed on a number of places along the coast many will be new and unknown to us, so we are never quite sure what we will find. That is part of what makes this style of travel so interesting.
