Planning a trip to Caucasus? Visit our Georgia travel website!

The Caucasian ridge is covered with eternal snows, stretching for 1100 km from the North-West to the South-East between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. These mountains keep a lot of secrets till this day, and remain one of the most unexplored parts of the Old World. The Caucasus region is separated between northern and southern parts. The southern parts consist of independent sovereign states (Armenia, Turkey, Georgia and Azerbaijan) and the northern parts are under the jurisdiction of the Russian Federation. There is the highest mountain in Europe - the Mount Elbrus, 5,642 metres (18,510 ft). Thanks to its climate and varied landscapes, the Caucasus has an incredibly rich biodiversity: there are over 6400 different species of vascular plants, 1 600 of which are endemic. The animal life is also abundant, there are 55 endemic species in the Caucasian area, various species of birds (more than 378), mammals (over 131) and reptiles (over 86).
