Khailasan

Khailasan is a rocky massif , which is used to be a tower of merkits in ancient times. It is one of the mail historical sights of Buryatiya. Among this rocks there is one reinforced place Shara - Tebseg, which is located at the ledge of vertical cliff. There is a path which leads there, at some dangerous places it is protected with stone borders. There is a hidden well with cut passage in the rocks. There are observation platforms on the top of the cliff from where one may see magnificent panoramic view for hundred of kilometers distance. According to historical data this fortress was Taikhan sanctuary, near which walls in 1176 Chingis-Khan had his first battle in his life. Japanese documentary film makers made a serial film "Chingis-Khan empire" near Khailasan.
