Monument the ”hare”

A story says that Peter the Great came by boat to the island where the Peter and Paul Fortress was erected. As he was about to set foot on the ground a hare, trying to avoid the flood grabbed hold of the Emperor's boots. The island later received the name of ”Zayachi” (hare). It is because of that legend that the statue of a hare has been erected on the island in 2003, near Yoanovsky bridge. It was designed by sculptor V. Petrovichiev. The statue depicts a 58 cm hare sitting on a trunk planted on the canal.
