Monument to Stepan Makarov

This monument on the Kronstadt city-fortress honors the memory of Vice-Admiral Stepan Makarov (1849-1904). This commander of the Imperial Russian Navy was a renowned oceanographer. Commanding the Petropavlovsk division, he died in a battle against Japan. Designed by Leonid Chervoud, this statue was unveiled in front Saint Nicolas Navy Cathedral in 1913. Stepan Makarov, dressed in his military uniform stretches his left arm. He seems to embody the words engraved on the pedestal “Remember the war”. On this same pedestal are three low-reliefs depicting: his participation in the designing of Ice-breaker Yermak, the torpedo battles that he gave and hid death when a mine touched his ship.
