City History Museum

The Sergiev Possad State History and Art Museum-Preserve (Serguievo-Possadsky istoriko-hudozhestvenniy muzey–zapovednik) includes several buildings. One of the museum’s buildings is a great two-storeyed red building. Earlier it was a part of the monastery and was serving as a stable. The museum possesses a great collection and was founded by the Lenin’s decree in 1920. The building of the 18th century contains different sections such as Sergiev Possad History, History of the city’s architecture and Decorative arts of 18th-20th centuries. There are a great number of gold and silver units, icons, artefacts of the folklore art and unique artisanal objects. The new building of the museum is devoted to the modern history: it represents the local people’s life in the 19th and 20th century and also shows the events of the 1930 and the city’s life during the Second World War.
