Monument to Chekhov
The monument to Chekhov was erected on July 10th 1990 to honor the memory of the great Russian writer Chekhov. The writer spent three months and two days on Sakhalin in 1890. He worked hard there as a scholar, a physician, writer and public person. He also interviewed thousands of people for a census. He studied the systems of medicines, education and prison. All the information he gathered during his stay and his trip served as the basis for his work ”Sakhalin Island”.
