The Kremlin of Novgorod or ”Detinets” (Kremlin in old Russian) is a monument of 10th - 12th century Russian architecture. Founded by prince Yaroslav the Wise, the Kremlin of Novgorod is the oldest of the those left in Russia. From the moment of its creation it was an administrative, public and religious center. Its walls defended the Cathedral Saint Sophia and the residence of the governor. The total length of the walls reaches 1,385 meters. Only 9 towers out of the 13 originally built are preserved to this day. The highest one is called Kokuy tower and is 41 meters-high. It is open to visitors during summer.
