Monastery of Saint Yuri

The male monastery of Saint Yuri was founded by Novgorod's prince Yaroslavl the Wise in the 11th century, at the source of the river Volkho near Ilmen park. The monastery was used as an outpost for the south of Veliky Novgorod. The main temple, Cathedral Saint Georges, is a unique monument of the architecture of the 12th century. The Cathedral held many events of the Princes' lives as well as some tombs of Novgorod's princes. The walls of the building were decorated with frescoes of the 12th century. The monastery was one of the largest estate, thousands of peasant belonged to it, as well as vast lands, fishing grounds, and art-craft studios.
