Sobolinoye lake

Sobolinoye lake (Sable lake) is the biggest and most popular lake of Khamar-Daban mountains. The story of its formation is closely associated with heavy natural disasters (huge rock collapses and landslides). Sobolinoye lake is a clear example of landslide lakes. Similar lakes can be met at many mountain systems. The lake is located at a height of 640 meters above sea-level. Its area is 1,1 sq-km. Its length is 2.5 km and width is 600m. Its depth is about 50 meters. Sobolinoye lake was formed as a result of river backing by moraine sediment bank, which glacier moved forward. At the present time further lake development is possible because of regular earthquakes, high annual average amount of precipitation, as well as frequent heavy floods at Selenginka river.
