Karakokshinskaya Cave

Karakokshinskaya Cave is one of the highest in Altai. It is a rare underground karstic formation in the North East of Altai. The cavity is located at an altitude of 2,000 meters. Its name comes from River Kara-Koksha. Its total length reaches 520 meters, its maximum depth is 24 meters. The cave has two levels linked by shafts. On the ground level, in the thick hidden blocks runs an underground river. In times of high water level, in spring, the water overflows and is released in high pressure through vertical cracks and canals in the second level forming streams and even underground lakes. The second level is 5 meters high. Stalactites and carbonate inlaying are rare in the cave. However it is home to a few bats.
