Caldera of Uzon Volcano

The Caldera of Uzon Volcano belongs to the unique natural sites of Kronotsky National Biosphere Reserve. It was formed 40,000 years ago. At the time a shield volcano stood there. Today, the caldera is a depression that has the shape of a cup of 9 x 12km. It highest point is Barani Peak (1,617m). The bottom of the caldera reaches a height of 650-700m. On a narrow area 200 to 300 meters wide are gathered 5 thermal zones: Vostochnoye (eastern), Ozernoye (of the lake) near Fumarolny Lake, Zapadnoye (western), Severnoye (northern) and Yuzhnoye (southern). They concentrate more than a thousand hot springs and in some places steam gush out. One can also find mud pools and small volcanoes, thermal lakes as well as mineral water springs. This diversity makes it one of the marvels of Kamchatka. Helicopter excursions, allow tourists to see the caldera and the Geysers valley.
