Tomalchevo Lake

Tolmachevo Lake is among the most beautiful in Kamchatka. Located at a height of 616 meters, it covers an area of 15 square kilometers deep into a depression called Tolmachevsky. In this valley stands Tolmacheva volcano as well as several cinder and lava cones. 60 meters deep, the water of the lake is cold. From the lake springs Tolmacheva River. Its rate of flow is 7,7m3/c. At first it is a quiet river but a few kilometers further it gains a strong current. On this river the construction of a small power station started in 1996. Since it started working in 1999 only one waterfall survived: Bolshoy (big). In the lake a special form of nerka salmon exists. Many marine birds come to nest on its shores where a typical vegetation of the Peninsula grows. Tolmachevo Lake offers a view on volcanoes Opala, Mutnovsky, Gorely, Khodutka and Ksudach. You need to have a special permit so as to enter the area because of the power station.
