Cathedral of the Dormition

The Cathedral of the Dormition was built according to the will of Grand Prince Ivan III. He put an Italian architect in charge of the project and this one finished it in four years. It was unveiled in 1479 but its history is actually older than that. Before, another smaller cathedral stood in that place, its construction had begun in 1330. Therefore the Cathedral is the oldest on Cathedral Square, and also the biggest. The Cathedral of the Dormition played an important part in Russia’s history for six centuries. It was in this Cathedral that the coronation of the Tsars took place as well as their weddings. It is also the place where high church dignitaries were elected and buried. Religious services were given in the Cathedral before great battles and after in case of victory. The wall paintings and iconostasis dating back to the 17th century are outstanding. The Cathedral became a museum during Soviet times, it was returned to the Church in 1990.
