State Darwin Museum

The State Darwin Museum, dedicated to the evolution of animal kingdom, is the only one of the kind in Russia. Its first director was biology doctor Alexander Kost. In 1907, he transferred his personal collection to the Superior Course for Women (higher education in tzar time) where he used to teach. This date is known as the creation of the museum. In 1995, the museum was relocated in a two-storey building. It contains a collection of three hundred forty-two thousand seven hundred items, but only five thousand are displayed. The museum is equipped with the latest technologies (computer with internet, 3D projection room…). Visitors can also listen to recordings of rare animal sounds.
