Museum of History of Moscow
It is one of the oldest museums in Moscow. The base of its collections comes from the “Moscow” lodge built for a Russian Art exhibition held in Nizhni Novgorod in 1896.
In a hundred years of existence the museum changed location and name a few times. It was first called “Moscow’s municipal museum” and was set in 1921 in the Sukharev tower (17th century). After the tower was destroyed in 1934, the museum settled in the church of John the Apostle in Kitai Gorod.
The museum’s collection now contains more than a million pieces relating the entire history of Moscow. Visitors can see archeological items, as well as arts and crafts, tools, everyday life and religious items along with paintings from Great Russian masters. A postcards collection also helps visitors visualize Moscow at different times.
